Prof. Cynthia Ning, director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Hawaii, tests a unique Chinese Language learning program by fusing traditional and non-traditional classroom and "hands-on" experiential learning techniques into a 3-week curriculum. She and her team, teachers from the US and China, coach 30 high school kids from across the US to become proficient in Mandarin. The program heavily relies on "sports", namely PING-PONG (if you don't know what that is, do you remember Forrest Gump?) and Martial Arts - and most of it is related to the kids in Chinese! Today they went to Hanauma Bay on Oahu, mostly to relax and to see what Hawaii (for most people) is all about: the ocean! When you are on the Big Island, Hawaii, make sure to visit the "City of Refuge" on the Kona side of the island. There you find the most spectacular underwater world that Hawaii has to offer (at least as far as I am concerned). Many turtles ("Honu" in Hawaiian) hanging around the coral blocks. This was a test shoot with new gear in 1999 before filming manta rays at night for the first time.

Dr. Tim Clark, University of Hawaii, attached acoustic transmitters onto manta rays for his PhD Thesis (2003). Goal was to find out where the manta rays live around the deep waters of Hawaii. Once the tag was attached he could track the animals acoustically, and thereby study the paths and habitats of these elusive marine "black & white angels". With a better understanding of their behavior, we can address concerns about the health of our oceans, and therefore protect not only the rays, but also their cohabitants. It was about 5PM somewhere off the coast of Costa Rica (Pacific side) when we packed ourselves into the small Zodiac, loaded with dive equipment, satellite tracking gear and a small marine turtle (Take a guess what species - and win a "Waterproof Kids" DVD!) And you can tell: she could not get away fast enough from us once released - ready to send scientists around the world data about her whereabouts. I simply enjoyed her taking off...
