We currently have 23 big, big cats at the sanctuary! This includes 18 tigers, 4 lions and Freckles the liger. This video shows the viewer just how much food these animals consume in one day and at what cost. We feed our cats mon-sat with a fasting day on sunday, wednesday night is "rat & bone" night which means whole (dead) rats for the smaller cats Siberian lynx - Geoffroy cat and then whole cow rib bones for the bigger cats Tigers - Cougars. We also give our larger cats whole prey (rabbits) to try and give them a good variety of food as close to their natural diet would be in the wild. Big Cat Rescue receives literally hundreds of calls about big cats that need a home each year and it is really hard to turn them away. Unfortunately we can only agree to rescue a few cats each year due to lack of funds and the space required to build more enclosures. We realize that the best way to make the most impact and help as many animals as we can is to attend meetings and speak up against the private owners and people who exploit captive animals to make a living. A group of Big Cat Rescue staff and volunteers recently attended the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Captive Wildlife Workshop in Kissimmee, weds 25th Feb 2009. As you can see from the video we were really out numbered and we really need more florida residents who care about animal welfare to join us at the next meeting and speak out on behalf of the animals. The Convention calls for biennial meetings in which one of the functions is to consider amendments to the lists of species possibly threatened with extinction. The June 17, 2009 hearing of the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission set a record for the number of animal lovers to attend and speak up at their meetings. Carole Baskin as been attending these meetings since 1994 and rarely do more than two or three animal advocates show up but at this meeting we counted more than 40 people who spoke in favor of tougher laws to regulate the trade in exotic animals. We hope this is the beginning of a trend and if so it will shape the future. Wild animals will no longer be exploited, abused, neglected and abandoned if the public continues to speak up for them The best news is that Cougars and Cheetahs have been uplisted to Class I which means that they can no longer be kept as pets in Florida. Those who already own these cats as pets can keep them, but cannot breed or replace them unless they meet the higher requirements for owning Class I animals which includes 5 acres of land, stronger cages and they cannot use them for petting sessions ...

We recently did a free tour for a group of veterans from our local V.A. hospital. Since a number of our own members are former military it is always a meaningful experience. We decided to make a different form of enrichment to give to Cameron and Zabu our male lion and white tiger that live in the same enclosure! The cardboard giraffe/gazelle was filled with small chunks of red meat to entice the big cats into action! Cameron was first on scene and didn't seem interested so Zabu had the enrichment all to herself. The tour group, staff and volunteers enjoyed watching her antics and we're sure Zabu enjoyed the snack and toy! We are always thinking of new ways to keep our cats entertained at the sanctuary, this year we decided to give them easter eggs to see how they'd react! They had a mixed reaction but overall the cats enjoyed their eggs and we think it was an egg-cellent idea! Jobs working with animals involve doing a variety of different things especially at Big Cat Rescue! We clean, feed, give tours, make enrichment, do admin work and of course do some landscaping on the property! We have over 140 big cats, which is alot of enclosures to maintain year round, watch as Big Cat Rescue staff and volunteers remove trees from two bobcat enclosures, one which fell over night and one which gets pulled down to prevent problems in the future. All the enclosures at Big Cat Rescue are made of two sections so we could easily separate the cats into one section whilst we worked in the other! When a distressed hawk was spotted in our male snow leopard enclosure we had to act fast! Hercules was separated into the other side of his enclosure and given a rabbit to eat and keep him occupied. Watch as Big Cat Rescue staff and volunteers neuter TJ the tiger. TJ was rescued from Savage Kingdom that was a well known breeding facility producing what we call "throw away tigers" so many tigers are born lame and cross eyed from the inbreeding that's required in order to produce white tigers. Whilst we were neutering TJ we took the opportunity to do a full examination of him which included taking blood for analysis and giving him an I.D microchip. Near Tunas, Missouri there is a backyard cage housing two tigers. The cage is in the corner of a three sided barn. There is no outside play yard for the tigers. The cage does not have a lock on the door either. This is not safe for the community and the situation is quite sad for the tigers. Every saturday morning at 9 AM we provide a special kid's tour for any children under the age of 10 years. This is a great experience for the kid's as they come face to face with tigers, lions, leopards, cougars, bobcats, lynx and more! The tour lasts for about an hour and they get to learn about the cat's individual histories, as well as the species in general. When a swelling was noticed on the ear of one of our bobcats, we decided to sedate Windstar in order to drain the fluid from his ear. We then stitched the incisions open so no further problems would occur. Windstar had been relocated to another enclosure the previous week, so we could renovate his. Joseph's Pride are two lions and two tigers that were rescued from a facility in Columbus, Ohio on october 19th, 2007. This rescue was made possible by the support of IFAW (the International Fund for Animal Welfare) and by all of our supporters who helped us raise the money to rescue these cats. As you can see in this update all four cats are doing very well and are enjoying their one acre enclosure complete with pool and long grass to play and hide in! Closed on Sundays is a nice look at Big Cat Rescue on our quietest day. Get a close up look of the cats like never before. Educating the public about captive and wild felines is very important and that is why we do tours Mon- Sat. We feel strongly about only being open on tour times, as not only does everyone get a tour guide to educate them about the cats and answer all their questions, but then it allows the cats to have a break between times where guests are walking around. After our busiest day on Saturday, there isnt a better way to spend a Sunday then to be closed. And in being closed not only do we provide a beautiful sanctuary feel for our resident felines; it also becomes a morning haven for our volunteers.
