Love [ME] Tender by Mary Bogdan. The Trailer. This series of intimate self-portraits has been a long time coming... it was my sister who was the "pretty one", the "thin one"... I grew up in her shadow... I was her little sister... never able to be mom's "favorite"... These are painful thoughts, years of feeling self-loathing... today I took these photos of myself with love & forgiveness, & thoughts of "I am beautiful"... chubby, but beautiful... My heritage was my sense of myself as a "fat person"... not quite worthy of beauty & love. Feeling deep pains as I write this... but today is the day I fight back & say "It's OK to be fat"... It's beautiful if you feel beautiful inside, if you are loved deeply by a wonderful man & if you love yourself enough to forgive yourself for being "fat"... Hell, who wants to be in the kitchen! To cook and clean dishes. Today's woman has earned her equality with man. So it's time for men to get into the kitchen. Of course with bate like Kerri, it would be a pleasure to share kitchen chores. The kitchen session with Kerri was not as easy as it might look. The session was video recorded to produce this short film. Photographer SoI had to consider the lighting for the video as well. With the window light streaming in behind her: "I wanted to equalize the interior ambient light so it will look natural and not too harsh. I placed a single light far to her left facing away from her This was probably 12 feet away and still about 5 feet from the wall that acted as a reflector. Like the love-ins of the mid-sixties and early seventies complete with (light) drugs and music, every Sunday afternoon in the summer in the city of Montreal is an outdoors park festival. This is the Tams at Mount Royal park. It has become a tradition among native Montrealers young and old and has become renowned the world over. A weekly event not unlike the love-ins of the late sixties and seventies. Peace, flowers, freedom, happiness… Remember the age of Aquarius? This is a short video I made to document the feeling and energy of the Tam Tams in Montreal. Jewish Clothes, a film by Sol Lang. My wife Mary Bogdan is an artist/gleaner. Much of her work consists of working with found objects, discarded items (AKA trash), that she collects from everywhere... We live in a neighborhood, in Montreal, that has a fairly large Jewish/Hassidic population. One day, as Mary was doing her rounds, she found these two large garbage bags filled with old clothes. She decided to lay them out on our back yard lawn to inspect them and air them out. In fact they were all clean. Evidently washed before bagging for the sake of whoever should find them... Soon after laying them out on the grass, a thunderstorm came and Mary was preoccupied with other things, so she just left the clothes out to get soaked and become victims to the rain and wind... The storm passed as quickly as it came. As I stepped out to look, I saw a sight that felt like a punch to my gut. The clothes were all lying, spread out as if they had been bodies that had disintegrated or separated from the clothes. My feeling was as if the souls were gone and all that was left was the memory of the people that were in them... I photographed the scene and put together what will (hopefully) one day become a photography exhibition... Here I combined the images in a video montage along with a haunting piece of music I composed and performed to convey that initial feelings I felt after the storm... As a Jew whose parents were survivors of the Holocaust in Europe, I am a second-generation survivor. I carry the collective memory and emotional trauma as do so many of my generation whose families endured similar life tragedies. This exhibition and video are representative of the depth of emotional healing that I hope to provoke with my art.... Jewish Clothes, a film by Sol Lang. My wife Mary Bogdan is an artist/gleaner. Much of her work consists of working with found objects, discarded items (AKA trash), that she collects from everywhere... We live in a neighborhood, in Montreal, that has a fairly large Jewish/Hassidic population. One day, as Mary was doing her rounds, she found these two large garbage bags filled with old clothes. She decided to lay them out on our back yard lawn to inspect them and air them out. In fact they were all clean. Evidently washed before bagging for the sake of whoever should find them... Soon after laying them out on the grass, a thunderstorm came and Mary was preoccupied with other things, so she just left the clothes out to get soaked and become victims to the rain and wind... The storm passed as quickly as it came. As I stepped out to look, I saw a sight that felt like a punch to my gut. The clothes were all lying, spread out as if they had been bodies that had disintegrated or separated from the clothes. My feeling was as if the souls were gone and all that was left was the memory of the people that were in them... I photographed the scene and put together what will (hopefully) one day become a photography exhibition... Here I combined the images in a video montage along with a haunting piece of music I composed and performed to convey that initial feelings I felt after the storm... As a Jew whose parents were survivors of the Holocaust in Europe, I am a second-generation survivor. I carry the collective memory and emotional trauma as do so many of my generation whose families endured similar life tragedies. This exhibition and video are representative of the depth of emotional healing that I hope to provoke with my art.... Love [ME] Tender. A film by Mary Bogdan. This series of intimate self-portraits has been a long time coming... it was my sister who was the "pretty one", the "thin one"... I grew up in her shadow... I was her little sister... never able to be mom's "favorite"... These are painful thoughts, years of feeling self-loathing... today I took these photos of myself with love & forgiveness, & thoughts of "I am beautiful"... chubby, but beautiful... My heritage was my sense of myself as a "fat person"... not quite worthy of beauty & love. Feeling deep pains as I write this... but today is the day I fight back & say "It's OK to be fat"... It's beautiful if you feel beautiful inside, if you are loved deeply by a wonderful man & if you love yourself enough to forgive yourself for being "fat"... Madonna & Child, The Whole Series. A film by Mary Bogdan. A video presenting the whole series of the current works by Mary Bogdan, entitled Madonna & Child, Or Re-Parenting My Inner Child, which deals with the theme of change or the hope of change. The artist addresses the issue of personal evolution in her own unique way through her encounter with the creative process. Within the moments of incidental illuminations that occur along the way, she discovers hope for metamorphosis, leading to transformation and ultimately, transcendence. The work involves the recycling, recovery, manipulation and alteration of “found” objects and demonstrates the pursuit of reinvention of self, of an approach to life or a way of being. It addresses the shaping of the self through the creation of art, both on a personal and collective level. The work looks at inner struggles and seeks a better understanding of self and its place in our society.
