It seemed a perfect backdrop for our meeting with a bunch of Black Metal maniacs, so we went straight from the plane to Enslaved’s practice space in the basement of the venue for Hole in the Sky (the most hard core Black Metal festival in Norway, and probably the world). Being a timid geek stepping into the lair of a band of mad Black Metallers I felt like I was a four-foot-tall Chinese guy trying to infiltrate the mafia… or something. I didn’t feel comfortable, all right? Anyways, Enslaved was just about to go on tour in India and they had also just been nominated for Spellemansprisen (basically, the Norwegian Grammy Awards, in their case for best metal band) so they could only play a couple songs for us. Well, a couple of songs turned into two hours in a tiny room with no earplugs… real smart. They’re a great bunch of guys, but they’re not Black Metal. They’re Extreme Metal, because they weren’t into Satanism like most of the bands we’d be meeting in the following ten days. Also it turned out we weren't supposed to have beers in their practice space. Uh, this is supposed to be the extremest music on earth and you're going to kowtow to some rental-space owner's beer rules? Right. So anyway, we snuck some in (Extreme!). www.VBS.tv

To see more episodes of this show, go to www.VBS.tv We kick-started our Norway trip by getting drunk with the guys from Enslaved and then spent ten days with some of the most renowned artists in the Norwegian Black Metal scene, ending it all at 1349’s practice space. During the trip I learned a lot about Black Metal guys. For most of them, their big thing is individualism, which can make it kind of hard to talk to them. They don’t really care what you think of them, or their band or anything, so it basically makes for completely one-sided conversations (interrogations, really, in my opinion). This may sound boring, and it can be, but Black Metallers do have shitloads to say about religion and current events, so if you go in with this in mind and stick to just getting their reactions and reflections you'll be fine (but don’t expect a question back). 1349 was a perfect example of this and, damn, are they fucking scary! I’d be worried about death threats, but they’re Black Metal--they don’t care what I think. Oh yeah, their name comes from the year the Black Plague came to Norway. www.VBS.tv
