No, it's not ACTUALLY a "musical." I was being funny. This is not what you think. Whatever you're thinking this is going to be, it isn't. Just watch and be entertained. This "music video" was edited together using an assortment of clips from the first series of Visits with Cass. All the visuals you see and all the sounds you hear are from the actual video clips. Nothing has been added, nothing has been changed (aside from a few minor volume tweaks here and there). There was no "cheating," this was ALL assembled using NOTHING but actual video and audio clips from the series and hours upon hours of painstaking editing.

The tenth in a series of rants by yours truly all about the wonderful world of Hi-Definition. Widescreen. It's been around for years. Movies have been in widescreen since the 50's. The majority of new TV shows have been filmed in widescreen since 1997 (some even earlier than that). Widescreen TVs are becoming the new standard and is, in fact, TV simply catching up to where movies have been for years. So...why does this seem to SURPRISE so many people? Let's rant about it! I'll likely talk about this subject more at a later date. For now, this is a basic overview.

Fairly straightforward rant this time around, as I pretty much chew out the HD-DVD supporters who still cling to the idea that they were somehow "wronged" because their format of choice failed, telling them to be accountable for their own choices and stop blaming everyone/thing else. Just a brief clarification: When I mention that I followed the Format War via amazon.com's message boards, I'm NOT saying that I used that as a "legitimate source of info," but rather as a typical example of the uninformed ranting and bashing from both sides. "The Uncreative Episode" After the 2-year success of their worldwide talk radio show, Tom and Sean decide to bring their unique style of humour to the unsuspecting television viewing public! But they quickly realize the key to success in television is to be able to outdo and improve upon one's self on a regular basis. So they don't want to be TOO creative in their first episode...that might entertain people too much. Originally shot on hi-fi VHS in two days, the first in late 1998 and the second in early 1999, the show was never completed in its entirety. In September 2005, I took everything we had shot and edited it all together into 6 episodes of varying length. Overall, it's not entirely what we originally intended the show to be (there were going to be a lot more pre-planned skits and less improvised stuff), But we just ran out of time and weren't able to complete it (I was moving to another part of the country a few days after our last shoot) That said, I do think there are some funny moments to be found. A strange animal to be sure, and at the very least it gave me the chance to try out my new (at the time) editing software. All six episodes are currently available on my website, and will also be posted here.

Here's another Video Letter Intro, this time from a series of "special editions" entitled Lost Treasures. The Lost Treasures series was essentially a collection of footage from various Video Letters that had never been completed for one reason or another. Rather than having the footage sit unseen in the archives, I decided to do this series to show some of the "Video Letters that might have been...but weren't." It was basically a way or me to use the footage from those old video letters without actually having to complete them. Plus the footage itself represented some fairly significant times in my personal history, so I thought Jason would find them interesting. This particular intro was filmed entirely on location, at a cool breakwater area near my place in Victoria. This one gives you a chance to see some of the beautiful scenery out here in BC. Originally videotaped on Digital8. Edited with Ulead Video Studio 9.0, with music from an old Amiga CD32 game (Pirates Gold).

This intro was originally edited, yep you guessed it, tape-to-tape. I managed to find the original master tape of the footage (it took a while to find because it was clearly labelled and I didn't think it would be...so I looked at every other tape in my archive, not thinking to look for one with an obvious label), and spent the night remastering the whole thing from the ground up. This is also a notable intro in that it is one of the few I did where I actually composed an original theme song for it. It was originally going to be the opening them song for Video Letter 30, but when the original version of Video Letter 30 fell through (the footage from which has subsequently become the primary focus of Lost Treasures II), I used it for the Update letter instead. The song is also notable in that it was the last piece I did using my trusty old Amiga 2000, before moving on to a PC permanently. So I kind of think of this song as my farewell to the Amiga. It originally took about a month to compose and put together. The "ethereal" title effects were all done in-camera, by overlaying the titles over the image and filming the screen I was using as a monitor for the camera. This creates a cool "video feedback" effect, which I used to give the titles a trippy look. This video feedback technique was also used quite effectively by the BBC back in the 60's and 70's for the opening titles of a certain classic sci-fi show about a certain Time Lord and his TARDIS. ;) (That's DOCTOR WHO, for the uninitiated...) The audio and video have been completely remastered from the ground up, although I doubt you would notice much difference on the web version. But at least I have peace of mind in that the archive version is top-quality now. I was going for a "dark and gothic" feel to this one, losing sight of the fact that despite all the cool "gothy" things scattered around my apartment, the apartment itself didn't have a very spooky ambience to it at all. Oh well. At least you get to see some of the cool stuff I had decorating the place. And the song has a cool gothy feel to it. This was the intro for the same update letter that contained the infamous "Sean takes cares of his parents' house while they're in Hawaii" video, although there aren't any clips of it in the intro (since the original footage was shot about two months PRIOR to the Hawaii trip). Taking the form of a combined interview with a famous celebrity and dance-off, this music video was originally thrown together, from concept to finished product, in about two hours. We didn't even know what song we were going to use when we filmed the dancing segments. Edited the old-fashioned way, tape-to-tape, with absolutely no regard whatsoever for syncing the audio up with the visuals. Fully remastered with digital editing gear in 2006, painstakingly matching the original edits frame-by-frame and using the original Digital8 master tapes. The audio, originally added with analog equipment, was also fully redone digitally. This is the remastered version.
