Its a funky beast that although sweet as sugar in parts, has a message that is quite biting and confronting. I love the sound Herrin has on his guitar parts and the Funky Love Horns do their thing again. The end of the song has a message that sums it all up rather nicely. We Were Friends was one of those songs that just flowed out of my pen onto paper (theyre the really good ones). It is the only jazz sounding song on the album. It is semi biographical about some experiences in my life and is also about being in love with someone through thick and thin, a union that goes beyond this life and into the next. Someone that you know you can trust will stand by you no matter what life may send your way and who you love with every fiber of your being. At the time I wrote the song I had no children but since then I have had the good fortune of helping to bring two wonderful kids into this crazy world and I can really see how they will carry on the seeds of Love that their mum and I plant in them by the things they learn from us.
