Riaa gone crazy!

Author: dextr0us
Added: Thu, 08 Feb 2007 01:21:05 -0800
Duration: 195

The RIAA wields the most power in the battle over DRM. Check out yesterday's show for Steve Jobs take on DRM, and why he hates it, but after we posted our show, the RIAA responded with this lil' nugget of wisdom.

"Apple’s offer to license Fairplay to other technology companies is a welcome breakthrough and would be a real victory for fans, artists and labels. There have been many services seeking a license to the Apple DRM. This would enable the interoperability that we have been urging for a very long time."

Um, RIAA, that's not what apple said at all. They weren't even implying that. Sure, we were implying that in our show yesterday, but Jobs sure wasn't. He argued his secrets needed to be kept and that lisencing fairplay was basically not an option. Either the RIAA A) glossed over his letter really quickly, which we find pretty unlikely, or B) the RIAA screwing with Steve Jobs. In either case, this could be the first time I've ever gone on record saying I kind of see the RIAA's point. If fairplay were opened to competitors, or released to a managing consortium, that could be the best of all worlds. It's basically already the standard anyway, what with the iPod and iTunes accounting for something like 85% or greater of the music download market.

I mentioned this to our producer adam, which scared the crap out of him. He immediately demanded an explanation as to why I could even think of agreeing with such a corrupt entity, bent on fleecing the consumer. I favor the subscription model instead of purchasing tracks, so that's why I'm not as opposed to DRM. I think there should be a place where DRM exists for people like me, who'd prefer subscriptions, but then also a place to purchase DRM free tracks.

We're not very confident that it'll ever happen, but that's the best case scenario... we think at least.

I need to take a shower. I feel dirty after actually understanding the RIAA. Blech.

Everyday users won't notice a true change... since most people use the format without thinking regardless. The real change could come when the next version of the PDF spec is released. By giving up the real rights to matininance of the spec, Adobe loses rights over what the spec can and cannot do. Now, it's up to the International Standards Organization to decide how PDFs will evolve and continue to change.

As a side note, PDFs are the image and document format that OSX is based on now, and are going to play a crucial role in Vista. Speaking of vista, we'll have our vista launch show tomorrow, and tell you exactly which version of vista is right for you. Thanks for watching, check us out tomorrow.

Apple has managed to get in somewhat of a PR nightmare after enabling record companies wills with digital rights management. First, the times calls any sort of digital rights management crippleware. The iTunes music store plus iPod environment is becoming increasingly dangerous for consumers, since you can only play music back with iTunes and iPod. Apple claims no liability, since it's really the four major labels who really want copy protection on songs. But, what about when an independant record label wants to sell music in the iTunes music store? Well, according to Netwerk music, they're forced to put DRM on it. Netwerk music, representing candadian bands like Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLaughlin sell music on the internets second biggest music store, eMusic. Tracks at eMusic are copy-protection free at the same $.99 price. The CEO of Netwerk music goes out on a limb and says 2007 will be the year labels could stop relying on Apple's fairplay drm strategy, and start selling regular ol' MP3s.
[oc]
Remember a month ago when we reported on Yahoo opening up sales? That same CEO says that's just the beginning, and soon enough we'll have more choice in the marketplace on how to get music onto the iPod, instead of relying exclusively on the iTunes Music Store.

NY TIMES:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/14/business/yourmoney/14digi.html

Apple's critics may be preaching for less DRM in the music space, but hollywood studios are pleading for Apple to shore up it's digital content management for videos. Last week, at the official unveiling of the AppleTV and the iPhone, Stevie J announced paramount would be joining the fold in offering online movie downloads, but why are the other big hollywood players noticbly absent from Jobs' foray into online movie sales? Business week says it's because studio execs don't like the digital offerings. Despite the ubiquity of the iPod, an unidentified studio exec tells business week that his steve-ness's rules quote-scare the heck out of us. They think the ability to play a video on a computer, an iPod and your TV is a horrid idea, and would rather fleece *cough* i mean maximize revenues by forcing consumers to pay at each juncture. They also think $12 is a paltry sum for new releases.
[oc] One step forward, two steps back. Music is a lot different from movies, but does that mean I should have to pay for a movie for every device I own? I think you and I know the obvious answer to that question, but will the Movie industry figure it out sometime this decade? We doubt it.
