One of my pieces from Northwestern University's "Weekly Edition", featuring former President Jimmy Carter. I was the first anchor/reporter on my school's brand new "tv news show" as a senior, 1985-1986. I actually won a Mark of Excellence Award in 1987 from the Society of Professional Journalists for this piece...despite the fact that I am wearing two layers of shoulder pads and have a white-knuckle grip on the mike. ;-) Please forgive the mid-80s "state-of-the-art" technology here. This was first done on 3/4" tape and then transferred to VHS (which degraded nicely in a cabinet over 14 years before it was transferred to VCD).

One of my news pieces from Northwestern University's "Weekly Edition", featuring 3-time Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Jeff MacNelly. I was the first anchor/reporter for our school's brand new "tv news" show during my senior year, 1985-86. Jeff was extremely kind to me. The world lost a great talent when he died way before his time, June 8, 2000. This was originally shot on 3/4" tape, transferred to VHS, then to VCD (after years degrading in a cabinet), and then, I did this HD "analog" version by shooting the VCD while it was projected on a plasma screen.

A visit to the Children's Peace Monument in Hiroshima, Japan...dedicated to Sadako who contracted leukemia after the blast. She thought that if she folded 1,000 paper cranes (a Japanese symbol of good fortune and longevity), she'd be cured. She died before she finished the project. To this day, thousands of chains of paper cranes arrive in Hiroshima, dedicated to her memory...and the quest for world peace.

"Gochiso-sama!" is what you say to the restaurant owner when you leave a restaurant in Japan. It literally means, "Thanks for the meal!" Yes, even though you paid, it's polite and customary to also thank them. And, why not? What they place in front of you is not only delicious and good for you...it's a work of visual art!
