The plan, entitled “Ohio, Home of Innovation and Opportunity,” was presented to hundreds of business leaders. It is intended to overcome negative perceptions of Ohio’s economy. The state, birthplace to Neil Armstrong and Thomas Edison, has an unemployment rate of 7.2 percent, the highest level in more than 15 years.

Strickland touted the state’s low cost of living, continued growth in exports, and the fact that it is soon to be one of only two states that don’t have a general tax on corporate profits.

The plan targets advanced energy, aerospace, agriculture, bioscience and bioproducts, corporate services, distribution and logistics, instruments and electronics, motor vehicle manufacturing and polymers. The state will focus on work force development and training for these industries.

Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown let go 76 employees, or five percent of its work force, in a bid to cut operating losses.
39 open positions have been eliminated, and dozens of employees are having their work hours reduced.
Spokesperson Valerie Downing says the layoffs will save the hospital about $5.7 million a year. Sacred Heart had $6.3 million in operating losses in its last fiscal year, the fifth consecutive year of operating losses.
Allentown, Pennsylvania has seen many of its major industrial businesses disappear over the last 20 years. The city contains the corporate headquarters for several global companies, such as Mack Trucks.

For the past week, the spider has been hanging dormant from local landmarks; but this Friday through Sunday, the beast will roam the streets of England’s sixth largest city, terrorizing helpless Liverpudlians.

The spider, inexplicably dubbed “La Princess,” has 50 points of articulations, and is operated by 12 humans strapped inside.

The French arts collective La Machine built the robo-arachnid. The group previously crashed a rocket in London's Waterloo Place, and built a 40-foot-high mechanical elephant.

Mississippi Power's Cindy Duvall said 100 workers and 30 trucks were on their way to help Entergy Louisiana. Duvall told the Biloxi-Gulfport Sun-Herald. "We might be from different companies, but our end in mind is the same - keep the lights on and restore the quality of life for our customers.”
Singing River sent 18 workers and 10 vehicles to help the Dixie Electric Membership Cooperative in Greenwell Springs, La.

The Department of Labor claimed a 5.7 percent to 6.1 percent increase in the jobless rate for August, suggesting the possibility of a recession.

The government’s supplemental program extends unemployment benefits from 13 to 26 weeks. In order to get the benefits, workers must state that they are currently looking for work. Without the supplemental program, many unemployed workers might otherwise have given up on job searching. And the government does not count these so-called “marginally attached workers” as unemployed.

Up to 250,000 of the new “unemployed” may be people who have given up on working, and therefore don’t count on the rolls. But the counterargument is obvious – even if these people aren’t counted as jobless due to arcane government rules, they are, in fact, jobless.

The papermill at Grand Falls Windsor is one of the largest employers in central Newfoundland, but has long been plagued by financial problems and a weak market. 171 jobs will be lost under a restructuring plan.

The review by the Legislative Division of Post Audit found that $1.3 billion in state and local funds were earmarked for economic development from 2003 to 2007. More than $800 million of this was in local tax revenue that was waived for businesses and industry.
Yet the number of new jobs created through these incentives was only 4% of the state’s total.

State officials defended the development efforts, blaming other states for luring businesses away with their own economic incentives.

Another $404 million was lost because of the repeal of a business and machinery property tax. The repeal touted by supporters as a boost to the state economy, but now that money is unavailable for economic development.

Seventy-three health care professionals have lost their jobs with the University of Texas Medical Branch. The layoffs are intended to improve efficiency at the academic medical center.
Nurses, pharmacists and even chaplains are joining the unemployment lines. Two departments, pastoral care and senior services, were gutted entirely.
Budget cuts will also reduce the facility’s ability to care for indigent patients.
University officials cut the jobs in the wake of a $50 million dollar deficit in the hospital’s 2009 budget of $1.61 billion.
“Layoffs are difficult and used as a last resort but are very necessary for business,” according to medical branch CEO Karen Sexton.
Two years ago, the Galveston-based university laid off 381 medical employees.

The city of Hayward, California is eliminating 33 vacant positions and laying off 16 employees, in the hope of reversing a budget deficit.
The Oakland suburb, birthplace of actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, offered incentives to employees to retire early, but the plan failed to prevent the firings.
Budget deficits, exacerbated by the struggling economy and falling home prices, are plaguing communities throughout the San Francisco Bay area. Hayward’s deficit comes largely from lower than expected tax revenues. In particular, the Real Estate Transfer Tax produced $3 million dollars less than expected.
The City Council promised not to reduce public safety services, so police and firefighters gain immunity for this round. The city of 155 thousand employs 870 people.

Johnson Controls Inc. a company which makes building and automotive systems is focusing on consolidating plants and cutting jobs.
The company didn’t say in which arena it would cut jobs but did say that it needs to lower excess manufacturing capacity at its automotive division. In reference to its building division, the move is shifting toward consolidating operation and rebalancing resources in Europe.
The company plans on completing its restructuring by early 2010. Johnson Controls also plans to take a pretax charge of $450 million to $500 million in its 2008 fiscal fourth quarter.

The airline is planning on making job cuts and the changes are due to start in October. It is expected that around 300 pilots will be let go. Fortunately, no flight attendants will be dismissed in the airlines business plans. Schedules will change as well with a 10% cut in flights out of Phoenix. The company also has first and second bag fees. They hope to save from $400-500 million on an annual basis. The overall goal of this is to better the price of flights. Lets all cross our fingers that the plan is successful.

According to economic expert Richard Wobbekind, he says it’s because higher-skilled jobs are more available in the region with advanced technology industries.
Colorado’s labor department showed that for the month of July, unemployment increased 1% from June to 5.2 percent. Compared to 5.7 percent on a national scale.
Boulder County lost 8,154 jobs as Colorado’s unemployment insurance jumped up to 14 percent. First time claims increased to 30,000 former workers for the month ending in July.

“A lot of people like their job because they like having a job.” Said Carl Van Horn; of Heldrich Center for the Workforce Development at Rutgers University. Recently, The Heldrich Center released a report called “The Anxious American Worker”
The survey revealed that Layoffs at a company even in small numbers generated fear among workers. With the addition of hiring freezes and disappearing colleagues this leaves workers with more work to process, less time to do it, and usually with little to no pay increase.
"All of those things lead to dissatisfaction, not only with work, but with life," said James O'Toole, author of "The New American Workplace" and a business professor at the University of Denver.
The US economy has shed more than 400,000 jobs since Jan 2008 and the median family income has not risen in the past 7 years according to “The State of Working America 2008-09” released by the Economic Policy Institute.
