Officials in the town of Clyde are hoping that the layoffs are only temporary until demand picks up again. They say workers were told of the changes this week. Clyde Mayor Scott Black says the layoffs could begin in early December. Whirlpool's factory in Clyde employs about 3,500 people. The total population of the town was 6,000 at the 2000 census. Whirlpool Corporation is a Fortune 500 company and a global manufacturer of major home appliances, with annual sales of $18 billion, more than 73,000 employees, and more than 70 manufacturing centers around the world. After acquiring Maytag in 2006, Whirlpool became the largest home appliance maker in the world.

http://www.EmploymentCrossing.com As the global financial crisis continues to weigh on the need for heavy vehicles, Swedish bus and truck maker Volvo Powertrain plans to lay off nearly 1,000 staff members in the United States and Sweden. The production at Volvo Powertrain, which makes gear boxes, rear axles and engines for trucks, has slowed dramatically as a direct result of customer insecurity in the financial markets. The Volvo group has been forced to let go of 2,000 workers at truck plants in Sweden and Belgium and has reported a 37 % drop in third quarter profits on the demand for heavy vehicles in North America. Morten Wikfors, Volvo spokesman says the job cutbacks will affect 100 in North America and 900 permanent workers in Sweden. Subsidiaries of Volvo include Renault and Mack Trucks and Nissan Diesel, which employ more than 100,000 people worldwide.

This move will be done in an effort to lower current operating costs from $40 million to $30 million as a result of the global economic meltdown. Sadly, QVC also plans to lay off 500 employees at its West Chester distribution center over the next 14 months. On Wednesday, severance packages were also offered to about 160 workers who were laid off at the Pennsylvania-based companies’, online shopping site. QVC also plans to eliminate 250 jobs by the end of March 2009 as it closes its West Chester call center. About 200 new jobs will be created within the company, however, as it shifts focus towards its distribution center in Florence, South Carolina. Opportunities for additional work hours will also be available for employees at the companies call centers in Virginia, Florida and Texas.

www.EmploymentCrossing.com Members of a state Senate committee have grilled the head of the Louisiana's labor department for answers on what exactly the revamped agency will be doing to bring jobs to their constituents. Democratic State Senator Francis Thompson expressed frustration over how the Department of Labor, now called the Louisiana Workforce Commission, spent money in the past. He said the department did not have focused priorities and was not helping meet employment needs in some areas of the state, despite a $270 million budget. “I’m wanting to see some results, and I don’t want to wait another year,” Thompson said. Appointments still need to be made for the state Workforce Investment Council, also created through the legislation. The council will conduct occupational forecasting studies, to anticipate job demand and help direct where money is spent. Workforce Commission Executive Director Tim Barfield told legislators he would like to better connect unemployment insurance to work-force development, by helping the unemployed with job opportunities or training. Barfield said the commission is also trying to reduce the time employees spend in the worker’s compensation program by revising medical reimbursement schedules, putting records in electronic formats and looking into redirecting injured individuals to new employment.

Another big business in Hawaii is making layoffs. This time, 130 people are losing their jobs. The DFS Group, or Duty Free Shopper Group, which has about 40 stores in the state, told employees about the layoffs Thursday. One hundred and twenty people were let go immediately. Another ten will be kept until the end of the year. DFS caters to tourists. Most of its stores are at the airport in Honolulu. A company executive tells us the layoffs are the result of the downturn in tourism and corporate restructuring. "The downturn in tourism here in the islands has affected everyone," said state tourism liaison Marsha Wienert. "And there is no business that is immune to it. Duty Free made some very tough decisions as many of our businesses have had to do." The 130 layoffs at DFS represent about 16 percent of the company’s 800 employees in Hawaii. When DFS founder Chuck Feeney sold the company to France’s LVMH Moët Hennessy • Louis Vuitton in 1997, he gave $26 million of the sale profits to 2400 long-time staff members

That partnership, Aquatic Ventures, has formally announced that it is taking over at Baltimore, Maryland’s Meadowbrook Aquatic Center and the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, which produced Phelps and six other Olympians over four decades. Bowman said he and Phelps will continue to balance the center's offerings between recreational and competitive swimming. Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in August, will be busy with training once the new year begins, but he'll be more involved in decisions as time goes on, Bowman said. Bowman began coaching Phelps at NBAC when he was 11. After the Athens Olympics in 2004, where Phelps won six gold medals, the swimmer followed Bowman to the University of Michigan, where he was head coach of the men's swim team. Now they are returning to Baltimore together. Bowman will continue to coach Phelps and other swimmers in addition to his duties as CEO.

http://www.employmentcrossing.com One quarter of the Chicago law firms that participated in a campaign to increase women partners achieved the goal of increasing female partner ranks by three percentage points between 2004 and 2007, according to the Chicago Bar Association's Alliance for Women. Twelve of the 44 participating firms met the goal, according to data provided to the alliance by the National Association for Law Placement. At the beginning of the alliance effort in January 2004, the percentage of women partners in Chicago offices was 18.12%. At the end of the campaign in December 2007, it was 19.31%, the alliance said in its final report issued last week. The number of firms that have women on their "power committees," the committees that lead the firms has double and is the same percentage as they are represented in the partnership, the alliance said. A third of the firms increased the number of committees with such proportional representation. About half of the participating firms increased the number of women as practice group leaders. The effort also set goals for providing fair flexible work hour polices and closing disparities between men and women with respect to retention, promotion and recruitment.

New applications for unemployment insurance rose 15,000 last week, to a seasonally adjusted 478,000, well above analysts' estimates of 470,000. Jobless claims above 400,000 are considered a sign of recession, according to the Labor Department. Goldman Sachs, Chrysler and Xerox all announced they were cutting workers by the thousands, adding to the woes of an economy beset by tighter credit and wobbly banks. The White House acknowledged the economy is going through what spokesperson Dana Perino called a "rough ride." "We expect our [gross domestic product] number next week not to be a good one, and the next quarter to be tough as well," Perino told reporters. Many economists expect the decline to continue into the current quarter and the first three months of 2009, if not longer. The classic definition of a recession is at least two consecutive quarters of negative growth. Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, testifying before a House committee, said he could not see "how we can avoid a significant rise in layoffs and unemployment."

The data contrast sharply with the gender ratio among HR professionals nationwide. About 70% of the country's 238,000 HR managers and 731,000 HR specialists are women, according to 2007 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The median weekly pay for male HR managers in 2007 was $1,581 – about 47% more than female managers took home. Among rank-and-file employees, men earned $1,037 per week, about 28% more than their female counterparts, the Wall Street Journal reports. One explanation: any companies hire executives from other business areas to lead human resources instead of choosing a director from within the HR department, and men generally outnumber women at the executive level. A separate survey conducted by Salary.com found that only four of the 30 highest paid HR executives were women in 2007. In 2006 and 2005, five and four women were among the 30 top earners, respectively.

EmploymentCrossing Federal regulators agreed to a consent order with Miami’s Intercredit Bank after reports cited it for violating banking laws, according to the South Florida Business Journal. This is the bank’s third regulatory order since April 2007, including an $8,400 fine related to its lending practices in June. The September 9th consent order, which the bank agreed to without admitting or denying wrongdoing, deals primarily with the Bank Secrecy Act. The bank was given timelines ranging from 30 days to 120 days to improve its compliance with rules such as verifying the identity of customers, screening for suspicious customers and transactions and keeping proper records of those activities. Intercredit Bank agreed with the Comptroller of the Currency of the United States to form a compliance committee with three directors, only one of them a bank employee or shareholder. This committee will oversee the bank’s compliance, including monitoring large cash transactions, offshore transactions and detailing its policy for when it won’t allow people to open an account. Intercredit Bank must also hire a Bank Secrecy Act compliance officer, who is subject to approval by federal regulators. The consent order told Intercredit Bank it must “take all necessary steps to ensure that bank management corrects each violation of law, rule or regulation cited in the Report of Examination… and in any subsequent Report of Examination.” These reports are not open to the public. “Three orders in 18 months, or one every six months, is really unusual and not indicative of good regulatory relations, which is more important than ever during these turbulent times,” Miami-based banking analyst Kenneth H. Thomas told the Journal.

So a special “Solvency tax” will be placed on 34,000 employers to replenish, beginning in January. The state unemployment trust fund had $120 million left at the end of July according to the latest figures. All Michigan employers will be taxed in 2010 to repay money borrowed from the Department of Labor according to the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency. EmploymentCrossing.com Social Security benefits for 50 million people will go up 5.8 percent next year, the largest increase in more than a quarter century. The increase, which will start in January, was announced by the Social Security Administration. It will mean an additional $63 per month for the average retiree. The increase is the largest since a 7.4 percent jump in 1982, and is more than double the 2.3 percent increase that retirees got in their monthly checks starting in January of this year. The typical retiree's monthly check will go from $1,090 currently to $1,153. But the fatter Social Security check may still seem insufficient to millions of retirees affected this year by huge increases in energy and food costs, and who have also watched helplessly as their retirement savings were depleted by the biggest upheavals on Wall Street in seven decades. In one break for most retirees, the cost of living increase will not be eaten up by higher monthly Medicare premiums for physician services. Because of gains in the Medicare Part B trust fund, that premium will hold steady at $96.40 a month, although higher-income people including couples making more than $170,000 annually will see their premiums increase. Barring changes in the next administration, the Social Security trust fund is projected to deplete its reserves in 2041 and will begin paying out more than it collects in benefits even sooner, starting in 2017.

Tetanus is a medical condition that is characterized by a prolonged contraction of skeletal muscle fibers. Hayek, a 42-year-old Mexican/Lebanese actress, director, television and film producer, is a paid spokesperson for Pampers' tetanus vaccine program. She recounted her experiences during a recent trip to the West African nation of Sierra Leone, where she met with tetanus victims. "One of the things that was very moving about the trip was to see 15-year-old girls, really young, taking responsibility for their lives and their children before they're born by saying 'I am going to be healthy, I am going to take this vaccination,' " she told journalists at the United Nations on Thursday. "I had no idea how much this was going to really personally move me," added the star of “Ugly Betty” and “Dogma.” The Pampers-UNICEF partnership has already provided over 50 million vaccines to mothers and babies in developing countries, where tetanus kills up to 140,000 infants and 30,000 women each year, according to the UN agency. Pampers, owned by Cincinnati-based Procter & Gamble Co., will give UNICEF the money for one tetanus vaccine for every pack of specially marked diapers it sells before the end of the year. It expects that to produce 70 million more vaccinations.

The contract is worth $16 billion in revenue for Honeywell over the projected 20- to 25-year life of the program. It is the largest systems and equipment package Airbus has awarded to date.
