When was the last time anything happened in campaign 2008 that left McCain camp clearly pleased and happy. In the absence of right tone and right message McCain and Sarah Palin duo have come dangerously close to running aground several times. Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari is visiting China on what is being billed as his first official visit abroad. Pakistan has long seen China as its most reliable friend, in contrast to the United States, whose support has waxed and waned in line with U.S. strategic interests in the region.

This, combined with US withering economic clout has left Pakistan with little alternative but to ...

US to compensate Filipino war veterans

This is a huge victory for Filipino war veterans who have been fighting for their rights and privileges for decades. Many of them not in active service were not recognized by the US government as entitled to same rights and benefits as a US veteran. Monetary compensation is a huge respite for the veterans but sadly it comes without any recognition for the services offered by them during the war. When will US understand that the issue of compensating Filipino war veterans goes beyond monetary benefits? They are seeking recognition from the US government for having fought like a valiant soldier alongside their US counterpart during the WWII. It should not be that difficult for the US government to deliver what is rightfully due to the ageing veterans. With the veterans getting older and dying one by one the US must fulfill its obligation towards them while theyre still alive.

Mixed results for Lula in Brazils local elections

In this Sunday were held elections in all municipalities to choose new mayors and city councilors. Voting is mandatory in Brazil. Around 125 million people voted in electronic ballot, which ensures a process of verification of the votes faster, safer and effective. In most of Brazil, the elections passed without major problems. Of the more than 5,000 municipalities, only 100 had some kind of problem, such as the arrest of election candidates doing propaganda in places of voting. In about 400 cities, the army's presence was needed tfor the security of voters against possible attacks by criminal gangs. It is too early to say who will be the winners, but about 50% of the votes have been counted. Moreover, in cities with more than 100 thousand voters, there will be a second runoff. However, these elections are a preparation for the elections of 2010, in which new governors and a new president will be ...

Congress to salvage $700bn bailout plan

The US Congress should immediately pass the revamped financial package without any delay if it wants to avert global economic downturn. How can the US turn its back on a self engineered economic crisis that has sent stock markets across the globe crashing down? Stock markets throughout the world registered sharp decline. There were large slumps in the price of oil and the value of the dollar - all of which is likely to cause an expensive headache for both US and non US investors. Credit markets are likely to remain almost frozen as banks remain reluctant to lend to other banks. It means that it will be harder for individuals, small businesses and large firms to get the loans they need - and more costly if they do manage to get access to finance. Fresh influx of capital through this package is essential to restore clarity in the financial markets and prevent global recession. This is a time to act and not ...

Defending Pope Pius XII

Pope Benedict XVI defense of Pope Pius XII role during the holocaust is correct. Pope Pius XII was not indifferent or anti - semitic though he did very little to oppose Nazism and help its Jewish victims. The Pope was a diplomat who understood the reality of his times and not a radical preacher. He avoided criticizing Hitler by remaining silent because he knew that his protest could bring an even worse catastrophe and invite retaliation against the Jews. Thus he chose quiet diplomacy and behind the scene action to save as many Jewish lives as possible from certain persecution. Ultimately, his sagacity helped save the lives of 860,000 Jews from certain death at Nazi hands besides maintaining the neutrality of the Catholic Church so that it could provide shelter to the war refugees. High time we should stop accusing the Catholic Church of helping the Nazis or remaining silent during the holocaust.

Taro Aso to become Japans new PM

Many are hoping that Mr. Taro Aso will help uplift the country from the political and economic turmoil. Mr. Aso becomes the prime minister at a time when the Japanese are extremely unhappy with high prices and a slowing economy. No wonder his promise of providing supplementary budget worth $107billion US along with ruling out consumption tax increase for three years to inject the necessary economic stimulus has brought a lot of hope to the electorate. He has also called for tax incentives that will encourage corporations to repatriate overseas profits and increase spending on capital equipment and research and development. The measures may sound appeasing but the mishandling of issues as far-ranging as a tainted rice scandal and health insurance for the elderly by the previous administration can make the going difficult for Taro Aso. Whatever else is said or done Mr. Aso can assure victory for LDP in the next general ...

France shocked by the images of war published by Paris Match

The French magazine, Paris Match, has acted irresponsibly by publishing pictures of Taliban along with guns, walkie-talkies and even a wrist-watch belonging to 10 French soldiers they killed in an ambush last month. The pictures were allotted the front page on the glossy spread, completely unmindful of the psychological pain and suffering which the families of the deceased servicemen and their serving comrades in Afghanistan would have to undergo when they see the pictures. Although the freedom of press is fiercely protected in France, the act has outraged the public which implies that the magazine should apologize for its careless act and refrain from such actions in future. French media has every right to rekindle the argument regarding the role played by French troops in Afghanistan given the fact that nearly two third of the population is against their positioning along with US led ...

The ongoing discussion within the Israeli cabinet to compensate settler's who voluntarily decided to evacuate their homes, has left the residents of both the West Bank and Gaza strip enraged. The plan emerged after Israel reportedly offered the Palestinians about 93% of the West Bank which means that dozens of isolated settlements will have to be evacuated.

Ehud Olmert resigns

It is all too late for Ehud Olmert, finally his past has pursued him like a shadow and caught up with him. We saw a caricature in one of the newspapers: Olmert is still at his desk, standing, and Tzipi Livni is at the door and he says to her: "I'll just collect the last envelopes and I'll be out of here." Who would want to be prime minister if that is the way it ends? Sad, very insulting and disgraceful! Olmert leaves behind a dejected national mood, lack of faith in leadership, unfinished and unraveling agreements, missed opportunities, revulsion at corruption, fear of violence, crumbling government institutions, a bruised army, an undermined court and great anxiety over the future. For the first time people are asking about tomorrow and they do not have a clear answer. The successors, we concede, do not inspire faith and confidence. They seem frantic, and self absorbed. What will come tomorrow for Israel? We may not know that ...

We may not know that ...</media:text>

India and Nepal to revise Kosi Treaty

Decision by both the countries to review the Kosi treaty is welcomed especially after the utterly futile mud slinging match that ensued between India and Nepal following the devastating floods in river kosi. The treaty signed in 1956 gives India the entire responsibility for design, construction, maintenance and repair of the kosi barrage leaving Nepal with little or no role to play in the project within its own territory. Yet, India continues to blame Nepal for the annual deluge conveniently forgetting the corrupt politician engineer contractor nexus within its borders that siphons million for repair and construction of embankments works that are never done. Congo, Uganda and South Sudan unite to fight LRA

Citing lack of progress towards a peace deal with LRAs leader Joseph Kony, the leaders of Uganda, Congo and the autonomous region of south Sudan have agreed for the first time to co-ordinate military efforts to end one of Africas longest wars that has brought misery to a region bordering several countries. However, it is doubtful whether they can effectively resume an all out war against LRA. The people of Central African Republic (CAR), recently tasted LRAs barbarism and fear the worst if the war materializes. Local Ugandans in the north do not want to jeopardize the normalcy restored by two years of ceasefire. Moreover, the south Sudanese, whose main trade route to Ugandas capital, Kampala, and beyond passes through the affected area, oppose a renewal of war. And Congo, which would have to undertake the daunting task of driving the LRA out of its jungle hideouts in the countrys north-east, has one of ...

US Federal reserves rescues AIG from collapse

The Federal Reserve has finally managed to turn the tide that could have could have shook the very foundations of the global market system. All the talk of near imminent collapse of AIG has been put to rest after Fed's $85b loan rescue. However the most radical intervention in central bank's history to save private business is bound to raise fresh controversy. The government put taxpayers hard earned at risk protect bad investments made by AIG and other firms. Besides why only AIG and not Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns who were allowed to fade out? The governments must introduce safety measures to keep a tab on the functioning of private financial businesses. Rest apart; the ...

Abandoned deal reignites rebel war in Philippines

Human history is fraught with conflicts for instance political, economic, social, and cultural. Some of them have been overcome successfully others await solution. The battle raging on the beautiful island of Mindanao has managed to create the most dreadful divide that transcends all the above categories. The story of Chritian Rita Lapi and Muslim Latifah carain epitomizes not just the rift between the two communities but also division of heart, mind and soul. This is absolutely tragic and could have disastrous consequences for Christian and Muslim population of Mindanao. History has witnessed bloody partitions accompanied by mass exodus of entire populations from one end to the other. The current situation in Mindanao opens window for a similar reenactment. Both muslim and Christian populace of the island must understand that commingling of minds and hearts can help resolve most vicious conflicts. ...

The coalition forces seemed to have veered from their real target which comprised the elimination of Al Qaeda and Taliban forces. Instead, they are now fighting the drug trade which helps the militias retain their power and a resurgent Taliban to fight which the Bush administration recently took the decision to enhance the US troop levels. ...

The Mercado de Futuros (MDF) S.A. Company had promised to return Thursday the money to the Parliament, however, after a long wait, it does not have that substantial sum.
MDF executives requested another 90-day deadline to recover the money because, according to them, it has been invested in coffee and oil operations and to purchase Euros.
Inquiries from the attorney's office stated that the stock market has no resources in the national bank system, but abroad, and they are not sufficient to cover $11 million of the Congress.
The embezzlement of funds to the MDF in February sparked off a scandal that took the Parliament to remove temporarily directive board president Eduardo Meyer from office
