So the parachute left with the nose cone, and the heavy rocket returned ballistic as a big lawn dart.

Amazingly, the G-Wiz LCX computer survived, beeping out the nearly mile-high altitude reached. Almost everything else was destroyed by the G-forces of impact. All epoxy joints ripped apart, metal bolts ripped through wood bulkhead plate, even the Duracell battery deformed, but kept on ticking. G-Wiz makes one tough computer!

The Animal Motor Works I271 "Blue Baboon" motor also looks like it survived, and of course, the nose cone and parachute drifted softly back down wind.

My two booster motors were supposed to ignite by computer to make it a closer race, but alas, everything worked except that both igniters failed to provide enough burn to actually light the Blackjack propellant. Next time, I'll go with white lightning for the airstart boosters.

So I did not get much altitude. The parachute swivel helped reduce twisting on the return. And upon ground landing, you can see one of the heavy (because unlit) motors pop out of the back.

The first rocket ended up in a supersonic shred overhead. The third one came up to pressure and then the experimental N4500 motor exploded soon after liftoff, creating a rain of carbon fiber bits that slowly rained down on us from above.

In the video, you can see our alarm that the launch pad came unhinged… as it ended up pointing straight at the launch line where the RVs and vehicles are parked.

The prior day, Mike did a successful L3 cert flight with this bird using a 98mm Aerotech M-size motor.

Here is a big rocket with a Q-sized motor. The propellant in this motor is 7 feet tall.

This was a first time test of the motor and main chute deployment at apogee. And it all worked beautifully.

I was the closest person to the pad. The soundtrack does not do justice to the intense roar at takeoff....

I was holding the video cam in my left hand and the SLR in my right. I prioritized the photo, and discovered that my left hand drifted a bit during the filming... The insanely loud burst of the cannon guaranteed an involuntary shutter press on the SLR as I leaped backwards...

A visual kickoff to the BALLS16 weekend...
