Itís what kids look forward to all year long. So when planning your familyís trips this year, remember to choose destinations that offer activities for everyone. This is especially true for the families of the 9 million children in America who have asthma. Consider climate, pollution, seasonal allergens and access to medical facilities when choosing your destination. Dr. Derek Johnson, pediatric allergist and immunologist: ìAsthma does not have to be a vacation stopper. The most important thing parents can do is plan ahead. You can go online and you can look at pollen counts and pollution levels in the cities that youíre traveling to and know what to expect when you arrive.î Choosing lodging also can be tricky when traveling with a child with asthma. Potential irritants such as smoke, mold and dust mites are everywhere.

We were driving past the pitch on our way to the hotel, when Beckham noticed the game in progress and had the vehicles circle back. We parked on the side of the road and walked down a dirt path to the pitch. The players were completely caught off guard. what began with a polite hand-shake quickly turned into a frenzy as they realized one of the game's most recognizable stars was standing among them. It wasn't enough just to shake his hand. They had to rub his head, touch his tattoos As for the game itself, Beckham took it easy. At one point, he took off his UNICEF t-shirt and gave it to one of the locals. This particular day was hot and dusty, but everybody was having a great time. Even though many areas in Freetown lack electricity, there was no shortage of mobile phones.

Life after the earth quake has been difficult for many children and adults who lost their homes and possessions a situation compounded by the fact that childrenís school activities were completely paralyzed. One of UNICEFís main objectives is helping children and adolescents get back to school immediately, through temporary classrooms and emergency curriculums. The temporary spaces are quick to install and offer children safe spaces to return to their studies. UNICEF has so far installed 304 of them for 34,000 students. Many teachers relied on the UNICEF materials, which also have guidelines on how to begin classes following a trauma like the one caused by this earthquake. At the beginning, parents and children feared another earthquake.

UNICEF: Temporary classrooms get earthquake-affected students back to school

<media:text type="plain">One of the most evident disasters of the earthquake that shattered Southern Peru last August was the destruction of over six hundred of the regionís schools. </media:text>

Muhamad Iswan and Khairul Idham attend classes on Timbang island, a half-hour by boat from the nearest town. This is the way many children must travel to school on remote islands in this part of Malaysia, if they go at all. Primary school enrollment is significantly lower amongst the indigenous population of Borneo than in the rest of the countryÖ Most indigenous people live scattered across distant islands, mired in poverty. Students work with computers to learn pronunciation, vocabulary and spelling. Prisca attends a state secondary school. Her classmate Ramata is an orphan who lives with her uncle and twelve other children, including two cousins also orphaned. Sending everybody to school has been a real challenge for her uncle. To help these girls stay and succeed at school FAWE, the Forum for African Women educationalists, a UNICEF-funded NGO that is also supported by USAID, organizes clubs of the same name in each secondary school of Ouagadougou. The FAWE clubs also help its members in other areas; here, young girls are counseled, given financial support, and taught income generating activities such as soap making, which is undertaken every Saturday. For these girls, to remain in school and have the chance to complete their education is becoming their greatest joy.

Much of the school year has elapsed and we did not receive anything other than the textbooks. My parents had to buy notebooks and stationery for the three of us although itís expensive. Our school desks are broken and fans are out of order. We take water in bottles to school because water tanks might not be clean. At the classroom I pay full attention to the teacher so that I understand what she teaches us well. I also help my classmates when they have difficultly with the homework. I want to become a teacher in future to educate children. When I go home I change my clothes and do my homework. After lunch, I take a nap and in the afternoon I watch cartoon on TV. Sometimes I help my mother with house work. I wish for myself and my sisters to succeed and excel in school. I also hope stability and peace prevail among all Iraqis.

"During this critical period of human history, healing the damage of industrial civilization is the task of our generation.
