It was directed by Bob Clampett, written by Warren Foster, and features music by Carl W. Stalling. It was also the first appearance of Babbit and Catstello, based on the popular comedy duo Abbott and Costello. The title is an obvious pun on the Charles Dickens classic, A Tale of Two Cities, but there is no other connection between the two "Tales".

Tweety reveals early on that his cute appearance masks a willingness to be merciless, even sadistic, towards anyone who threatens him. After slipping one of the cats a bomb which explodes (offscreen), the bird remarks, "Aw, da poor putty tat - he cwushed his widdow head!" Followed by a big grin. (This line was patterned after a catchphrase from a Red Skelton character, and would be used in other Warner cartoons, such as Easter Yeggs.)

Director: Dave Fleischer
Writers: Seymour Kneitel (writer)
Joe Shuster (characters)
Release Date: 26 September 1941 (USA) more
Genre: Animation | Short | Action | Adventure | Family | Sci-Fi more
Plot: The Man of Steel fights a mad scientist who is destroying Metropolis with an energy cannon.
Right: Public Domain
Story: A mad scientist threatens Metropolis with a destruction ray. The Daily Planet is sent a letter telling them he will destroy Metropolis at midnight.
Lois Lane (somehow) knows where he is and flies there in her plane(!!). He captures her and starts destroying Metropolis. Superman comes to the rescue!
The animation is superb--very fluid movements and some truly spectacular shots. In the restored DVD the colors are bright and the sound has been tweaked into stereo with good effect. The story line is simple--but it IS a cartoon! The action sequences are swift and (for 1941) pretty violent. Basically an excellent animated short. Don't miss this one! A 10 all the way.
