The U.S./Mexican border is one of the world's best laboratories for learning the effects of globalization. As a global community it is our responsibility to understand the relationships between developed and developing countries. Moving into a 21st century of global trade, global travel, and global communication, we are all personally connected to the world's population. The clothes we wear, the food we eat, and the air we breathe connect us with individuals around the world; a majority of whom live in poverty and do not earn enough money to support their families. Undocumented immigration is merely one of the aforementioned effects of globalization. Along the U.S./Mexican border since 1994 the number of deaths in the Southern Arizona desert has continued to increase until in the summer of 2005 it reached a record high. Many of these deaths occurred from dehydration. The larger context behind our country's undocumented population shows that trade policies and economic sanctions do not allow people to stay on their land. Two years following the signature of NAFTA in 1994 over 1 million Mexican farmers were displaced because of U.S. cheap corn. As we move into a global world it is vitally important that we take on global responsibility. This film deals specifically with border crossing and the people who cross. It is through their stories that we can gain a greater understanding.

Gillnetters account for a large percentage of the commercial fishing fleet of New England. Though its history is centuries-old, beginning with the Native Americans, contemporary gillnetting took hold only in the 1970's with the modernization of the small- boat fleet from handlining and longlining. Experience one day in the life of a gillnetter. Captain Stuart Tolley and his three-man crew steam five hours east of Chatham, Cape Cod out to the fishing grounds known as Dwyers, just west of the Atlantic's notorious George's Bank. Underwater sequences show how gillnets catch cod and haddock. You'll also learn how gillnetters decide where to fish, how the fish are hauled and processed on-board, and where the catch goes once they return to shore. In 1914 Guglielmo Marconi built a wireless station in Chatham, Cape Cod that would distinguish itself as the busiest ship-to-shore station in the Northern Hemisphere for most of the 20th century. With this historic operation he took the initial technological genius of the first transatlantic transmittion and transformed it into the every day business of wireless communication that is at the heart of today's radio, cell phones, and satellite transmissions. His station, Chatham Radio WCC, made historic transmissions to the Hindenberg, Amelia Earhart, Admiral Byrd, and Howard Hughes, among others.
