As long as it takes to get into third gear was the amount of time before we realized that the Honda CRF450X is packing a little extra where it counts. Of course, that's about how long it took for our left arms to pump up also. Despite the heavy clutch action, the 2008 model runs extremely well in stock form, even with all the emission controls that allow it to be green-sticker legal. Once the Yamaha W450FR is allowed to compete on a level playing field - compete is exactly what it did. All of our testers appreciated how quickly the five-valve 449cc motor spins up. On the dyno, the Yamaha actually bests the other machines in peak output. Though topping the CRF by less than half a horsepower, and the same in torque, the Honda still has an advantage in the real world. In terms of sheer acceleration, the red machine will pull away from the blue bomber, but much of that is a result of the gearing rather than power delivery. We all know that you don't have to be the biggest, baddest dude in the group to get some action. Sure, those guys have their moments, and maybe those attention-grabbing physiques are exactly what some people are looking for. But, if people only shack-up with the best there'd be no hope for the rest. That's exactly where Kawasaki falls into the mix with its 2008 KLX450R. While Honda is the chiseled muscle-head that impresses with its biceps, and the Yamaha is more of the easy-on-the-eyes, smooth talking type, the Kawasaki's role is of "the friend". The KLX is definitely lovable and has some attractive features alright, but they're hidden behind its somewhat oafish appearance. Awaking refreshed and ready, we knew our final day of riding would be filled with challenging weather. But the damp Northern California climate wasn't too imposing, as the moist air and damp road felt like home. Our route would take us through familiar real estate, hugging the coast and gigantic Coastal Redwood forests before cutting up into Oregon on US-199 - the Redwood Highway. The giant trees were a good setting for the newest model in our SST comparo, Kawasaki's colossal Concours 14. The C14 is a sport-touring platform built around a 1352cc Inline-Four and monocoque frame. Like the gargantuan trees we began to encounter north of Mendocino, the Kawasaki powerplant dwarfs its competitors. After a momentous crossing of the Golden Gate, our S-T troop plodded forward on Highway-1, winding up the serpentine PCH toward Stimson Beach and Point Reyes. Fog made the challenging roadway even more formidable, but our mounts were ready for anything, including the elder statesman of the five, Honda's ST1300. Making its debut back in 2002, the Honda ST1300 has the longest tusks in our S-T test. A refinement of the decade-long run of its ST1100 predecessor, the 1300 embodies the touring pedigree of the manufacturer which brought us the Gold Wing. With these plaudits it's easy to dismiss the conservative-looking ST as unexciting, but, as we would discover, the Honda has much to offer as a sport-touring platform. Motoring at a rapid pace up the coast past Cambria and San Simeon, it is easy to fall in love with the Yamaha FJR1300. We already discovered as much in our previous S-T comparos, with the FJR victorious in 2004 and just falling short in 2006. If it was to be victorious this year, it would be a real upset, as our Tuning Fork test bikes, which included the ABS-equipped standard and auto-shifting AE version, were 2007 models - the only '07s in our testing cadre. Approaching the darkened mountains of Big Sur, we charged through the dark for our Monterey hotel beds in the refined comfort and immediate confidence radiating from the Yamaha. Whereas most bikes headline with the motor, the highlight of the FJR, by far, is its stellar handling. Hitting the 405 to escape from L.A. our five-bike comparo got underway. The swanky K1200GT is a solid fit for the wealth and glamour of Southern California because our BMW test unit delivers all the luxurious goods. Heated grips? Check. Heated seat? Check. Heated passenger seat? Check. Adjustable windshield, cruise control, roomy and easy-to-use luggage. The Beemer's touring credentials are, without doubt, the strongest in our group. In fact, the BMW K1200GT arrives at our 2008 Comparo as the reigning champion by virtue of its ample touring amenities. But its edge over the Yamaha FJR in our 2006 head-to-head was a slim 3-2 split decision among our '06 group test riders - of which only two returned for this year's comparo. With new testers to win over and the competition as strong as ever, the Beemer's position at the top is by no means secure. Sitting atop a rise in the trail in Tennessee Mountain, Oregon (miles from anywhere) and surrounded by snow-covered rocks, we were struck with a thought: Polaris' Outlaw lives up to its name. This bad-ass machine breaks all of the rules of sport quads, will go just about anywhere, and truly looks the part with a unique, aggressive style. Sport ATVing has a dirty little secret: Sport quads are less all-terrain than they should be. Focused more on the narrow confines of sand and motocross, most sport machines are not the best for when the terrain is truly challenging. Rutted, root-infested, muddy, rocky trails will all give the limited clearance of a sport quad fits as the low-slung brake and sprocket drag their way over the various obstacles that throw themselves in the way. To say Honda raised the bar within the middleweight sportbike segment would be an understatement. With the yellow over-rev light staring me in the face I grab an upshift. I start to feel the front-end gently climbing skyward as I motor uphill towards Laguna's infamous corkscrew, I run the bike wide and to the outside, setting up for the famous turn. I close the throttle, snag a downshift and squeeze the tank with my legs as hard as I can while jamming on the front brake lever, then out of the corner of my eye last year's world champ and certified Laguna expert, Nick Hayden, snakes through, rear-wheel kicked out sideways, then in a instant he's gone... The top of the luxury-touring segment has been ruled by an unlikely trinity comprised of Bavarian, Japanese and American manufacturers. While the Gold Wing , with its horizontally-opposed six, has long been the standard, BMW's sharp K1200LT, with its Inline Four, has also developed a devout following, especially in the European market. For the longest time this left one marque with the distinction of being the only American V-Twin alternative. Harley-Davidson long stood unopposed in the V-Twin luxo-touring niche with its Ultra Classic models. Then Victory shook things up last June with the release of its Vision Tour, also powered by a big bore American-made V-Twin.
