Workers represented by the Service Employees International Union and the Professional and Technical Engineers Union crowded into council chambers Tuesday to protest Mayor Ron Dellums' proposal to cut about 200 jobs from the city's payroll. Dellums is proposing that the Bay Area city of 401,000 eliminate jobs and make other cuts to try to reduce its $42 million budget gap. The mayor is also considering raising parking fees and parking citations, closing some city parks, reducing youth recreation center hours, and closing City Hall on Fridays. Union officials want to bring in a consultant to look at the city's books and come up with an alternate plan.
