Cycle Rickshaw ride thru New Delhi, India

Author: pankajw
Added: Sun, 14 Jan 2007 23:12:08 -0800
Duration: 221

A typical ride from Central Market to Laj Pat Nagar on a bicycle rickshaw. This rickshaw walla made 5 ruppees for this 10 minute jaunt. Currently about 10 cents.

Rickshaw drivers in India make their living by transporting people and goods in the cities and towns. Although there are now motorized rickshaw scooters, most of the major cities still have hundreds of men who make their living by operating cycle rickshaws.

Many of the men who are employed as rickshaw drivers have recently migrated to the cities leaving their families behind in the villages in order to tend their fields. They may not return to their villages for months at a time. Consequently, at many locations in any Indian city you can observe enclaves of rickshaw drivers who live, eat and sleep next to the roadside.

Rickshaws which are operated by the driver running on foot and pulling the rickshaw behind him were outlawed by the government, with the exception of Calcutta, where the union of rickshaw drivers refused to accept the legislation.

    Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people,
    dispenser of India's destiny.
    Thy name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat, the Maratha country,
    in the Dravida country, Utkala (Orissa) and Bengal;
    It echoes in the hills of the Vindhyas and Himalayas,
    it mingles in the rhapsodies of the pure waters Jamuna and the Ganges.
    They chant only thy name,
    they seek only thy blessings,
    They sing only thy praise.
    The saving of all people waits in thy hand,
    thou dispenser of India's destiny.
    Victory, Victory, Victory, Victory to thee.

Some of the individual falls are up to 82 metres (269 feet) in height, though the majority are about 64 metres (210 feet).

The Garganta del Diablo or Devil's Throat (Garganta do Diabo in Portuguese), a U-shaped 150-metre-wide and 700-metre-long (490 by 2300 feet) cliff, is the most impressive of all, and marks the border between Argentina and Brazil. Most of the falls are within Argentine territory, but from the Brazilian side a more panoramic view of the Garganta del Diablo is obtained.

An unusual addition to the great variety of geological features in Death Valley National Park, the Ubehebe Crater system contains several volcanic craters, cinder cones and ash hills, all relics from an explosive steam eruption about 2,000 years ago, when rising magma met an underground lake.

Ubehebe is by far the largest crater, 2,400 feet in diameter and 500 feet deep, and presents a very colorful spectacle with variegated, buckled strata around its sides and grey-black ash on the rim - especially pretty at sunset or sunrise. The region is located in the far north end of Death Valley on the way to the mud sliding rocks in the Racetrack.

First performed in 1911, Jana Gana Mana was officially adopted in its Hindi version by the Constituent Assembly as the Indian national anthem in January 24,1950.

A formal rendition of the national anthem takes fifty two seconds. A shortened version consisting only the first and last lines (and taking about 20 seconds to play) is also staged occasionally.

Translation into English

    Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people,
    dispenser of India's destiny.
    Thy name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat, the Maratha country,
    in the Dravida country, Utkala (Orissa) and Bengal;
