With more talent suddenly available -- at bargain prices in certain cases -- some firms are taking advantage of the down economy to bolster their partner ranks. At the same time, firm leaders say they are being choosier than ever about whom they bring on board because they have more options, and because the slow economy demands that they be cautious in their decisions. They are looking for proof, not promises, that lateral partners can bring along a stable of clients. Harvey Freishtat, chairman of McDermott Will & Emery, said "In some cases, the candidate's relationship with their clients will change if they leave their firm. We want to make sure their business is portable." Not surprisingly, recruiters report that demand is steady for partners in bankruptcy, restructuring and other practice areas that typically flourish in tough times. Sedgwick announced it is bringing on 21 attorneys from Gordon Hargrove & James of Fort Lauderdale. Once the deal is finalized January 1st, the merged firm will have more than 400 attorneys operating under the Sedgwick name. The deal adds Sedgwick’s tenth office in the United States. The firm also has offices in Europe and Bermuda. Pushing into Florida has been a goal of Sedgwick, said Chairman Michael Tanenbaum. Many of the firm’s clients have cases in Florida, and this new office allows Sedgwick to provide “comprehensive coverage.”

Cabot Microelectronics has brought 90 new jobs to the Aurora area this year when it began producing polishing tools used to improve the quality of microchips. The 90 jobs created at Cabot include positions in manufacturing, and research and development. And that's good news during a time of layoffs and downsizing seen across many industries this past year. Cabot, a leading supplier of chemical mechanical planarization slurries, now has two buildings in Aurora's Meridian Business Park. The company's headquarters is at 870 N. Commons Drive, where 400 employees work. There's a good chance that the high-tech Aurora manufacturer had something to do with the design of your cell phone, television, computer, or any product with a series of microchips. Its clients include IBM and Intel. Cabot has received national attention for its high-tech operations. Two years ago, President Bush visited the facility to talk about the importance of advanced technology in the United States. The company creates pads that polish layers of microchips, known as wafers. The pads, which are white and smooth, are created from resin beams. The pads are then buffed and sanded down to a finite texture. Any impurity could cause a short circuit to the electronic product. Currently, pads make up 3 percent of Cabot's overall revenue, but it's a sector of the company that's growing rapidly, spokesman Amy Ford said. The company's polishing pads business has grown from less than $1 million in revenue in 2007 to approximately $15 million in revenue this year. The biggest portion of Cabot's business comes from polishing tungsten in semiconductor chips seen in mp3 players, cell phones, gaming devices and digital video recorders.

The sales picture for the holiday shopping season is looking down compared with the recent past. Surveys done before the stock market drop this month were already showing that retailers, along with shipping and delivery services, that typically need help around the holidays, plan to hire about 20 percent fewer seasonal workers than in 2007. Major retailers, such as Macy's and Wal-Mart, suggest that job seekers call hiring managers at local stores to get the process started. Online sites, such as EmploymentCrossing.com, can also be useful in looking for less-obvious opportunities. Thirty-four percent of potential employers said they value a positive attitude above all, according to a survey done in September, while 25 percent cited previous experience as their No. 1 criteria in evaluating applicants. One out of 10 managers said a commitment to work the entire holiday season was a strong plus. Surveys also show that Target, Wal-Mart, J.C. Penney and other so-called "value retailers" will be doing the most hiring, because of the anticipation that more holiday shoppers will rule out higher-end retailers in a down economy. Additionally, shipping companies, such as UPS and FedEx will be looking for extra help, as always, particularly in package-handling positions. Companies that keep track of retail inventory, such as SRGIS, also do extensive hiring around the holidays to help monitor sales and returns of holiday purchases. Macy's plans to hire about 23,000 temporary workers nationwide between Oct. 6 and Dec. 12, according to Arlene Tumbaga, director of associate recruitment for Macy's West. Online shopping also continues to expand and could become a growing source of job opportunities during the holidays at retailers' packing and shipping facilities. Last year, online holiday sales increased 19 percent to $29 billion, according to the Challenger, Gray and Christmas survey.

A spokesperson for the company declined to state how many jobs would be cut, but said they would be cutting jobs at Altria, and its cigarette unit, Philip Morris USA. Both companies are based in Richmond, Virginia. Altria Group also owns cigar maker John Middleton and is also buying smokeless tobacco company UST Inc. to pursue growth outside of cigarettes. Spokesperson David Sylvia confirmed that the company is cutting jobs and is deciding how many layoffs will occur between now and February 2009. Altria originally announced in August 2007 it would cut as many as 400 job positions when it moved headquarter offices from New York to Richmond, Virginia. These cuts were designed to save $250 million annually. The latest cuts, are in addition to those layoffs. Altria and its subsidiaries employ more than 10,500 people.

Overseas travel, which excludes visitors from Canada and Mexico, is expected to slide 3 percent. But the travel association says it expects international traffic will finish 2008 up 9.1 percent from last year. Domestic travel, by contrast, will end the year down 1 percent, followed by a 1.7 percent decline in 2009. The forecast is based on interviews conducted with 2,300 American adults. Based in Washington, D.C., the Travel Industry Association is a lobbyist group for the travel and hospitality industries.

His election Tuesday also makes congressional approval of a fresh economic stimulus package — perhaps as large as $150 billion — more likely, economists said. The new president's biggest challenge will be to turn around an economy that many analysts already believe is in recession. The Illinois senator has pledged to offset some expenditures by raising corporate tax rates and income taxes on families making more than $250,000. In return for government rescue dollars, banks, insurance companies, hedge funds and the rest of the financial sector will almost certainly face a regulatory overhaul effort by the Democratic Congress next year. Obama will most likely support the Employee Free Choice Act, which would allow workers to form unions by getting a majority of employees to sign a card in support of a union, rather than through a secret ballot election. Business groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce fiercely oppose the measure because it would make it easier for workers to unionize. The measure, supported by Obama and most Democrats in Congress, was approved in the House last year but stalled in the Senate. Meanwhile, Obama has promised to help Ford, General Motors and Chrysler by doubling a recently approved loan program to $50 billion. to help the auto industry develop more fuel-efficient cars.

The number of continuing claims to collect unemployment insurance shot to a 25 year high. The U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday that initial filings for state jobless benefits reached 481,000 for the week ended November 1, 2008. The report shows the number of Americans continuing to collect unemployment benefits surged to 3,843,000, the highest level since 1983. A year ago, the number was 2,590,000. “It’s a problem,” said Bob Brusca, an economist at FAO Economics, “The labor market is not looking good at all. The small back off, that’s not great…initial claims have fulfilled any expectation you have of them for a normal or severe recession.” Last month, nearly 7,500 jobless claims were filed due to Hurricane Ike and Gustav. The number of claims spiked in late September to 499,000, the highest level recorded since the wake of September 11 terrorist attacks. Further, a private outplacement firm reported that last month had the highest number of pink slips handed out since January 2004.

Union officials and children's advocates say they're flabbergasted the agency would request overtime when it's cutting staff. They claim the agency already is understaffed and has caseloads that exceed limits set by a 17-year-old court order. Democratic Governor Rod Blagojevich has refused to sign legislation providing money to 320 sustain jobs he plans to cut at DCFS, the Department of Human Services, and elsewhere. DCFS will lay off 179 and move 127 to other jobs. The reductions are part of $1.4 billion Blagojevich cur from the state budget in June.

The blood thinner heparin, given to patients undergoing heart surgery and kidney dialysis, was the focus of a major recall earlier this year after crude drug material from China was found to be contaminated with chondroitin sulfate. Hundreds of frail patients suffered severe allergic reactions, and nearly 250 died. The FDA's handling of the contamination scandal has drawn criticism and sparked congressional inquiry. The agency inspected the Cincinnati company, Celsus Laboratories, in April and at that time found contaminated heparin in two different kinds of products. A little over two pounds of the blood thinner was intended for use directly with patients, and another 31 pounds was to be utilized in diagnostic test kits and medical devices. The FDA seized the heparin after informing the company that its efforts to notify customers of the contamination problem were unsatisfactory. Another scam in a predominantly African-American area of Philadelphia, led potential voters to believe that they could be arrested at the polls for outstanding parking tickets or criminal convictions. It is expected that dirty ticks will only get worse during the final hours of voting on Tuesday as many are concerned about the vast number of first-time voters and youthful voters that are flocking to the polls for this monumental presidential election. This year, however, is no exception to previous years where deceptive scams and trickery have been used to confuse and deceive voters.

In Ramsey, Minnesota, parents Shelly and Lars Brosdahl were horrified when their children returned from Halloween trick-or-treating. The couple found what appeared to be methamphetamine and $85 in cash among their 7-year-old son's Snickers bars and Skittles. The Brosdahl’s called the police, who confirmed that the substance was infact methamphetamine, worth up to $200 on the street. Someone who looked like a teenager dropped something into their son's bag as he went trick-or-treating with his 9-year-old sister on Halloween night, the Brosdahl’s say. "He said some bigger kid ran by him and asked if he wanted some candy," Lars Brosdahl said. "He said `Sure,' and the kid dropped it into his bag." The clear crystals looked like rock candy, the parents said. "The (kids) could have OD'd on it. That's what makes me so shaky and upset," Shelly Brosdahl said. Police think the young man was a suspect fleeing police after a report of an assault in the area that night. Police in Ramsey, northwest of Minneapolis, did not immediately return a call seeking comment Tuesday.

"If the culprit did not [profit] and it was a malicious prank, the SEC would be less inclined to pursue this," he said. It’s unknown whether the reported suspect uploaded the false story for profit. The stock market and the SEC reacted strongly to the iReport.com story because Jobs' health has been a subject of close scrutiny, and the company has not formally identified a successor. Jobs had pancreatic cancer some years ago and said he has been cured, although he waited nine months before announcing both his illness and his treatment. More recently, blogs buzzed with reports that Jobs looked pale and ill when he launched the new 3G iPhone at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in June, sparking concerns that the cancer had returned. While Jobs and Apple have made some effort to address those concerns, worries about Jobs' health -- and fears about the impact on the company -- continue to dog the Macintosh, iPod and iPhone manufacturer. The SEC, meanwhile, has become very sensitive to market manipulations via faked news reports or stock-hyping spam, better known as pump-and-dump schemes. Whether or not there was a profit motive, the false report may warrant criminal investigation because "it caused a major swing in the stock of a pretty important company," Christie said.

The Conference Board, the New York-based independent economic research organization that tracks the official confidence index, reports consumer confidence fell to 38 in October, down from 61.4 in September and significantly below analysts' expectations of 52. That's the lowest level for the index since the Conference Board began tracking consumer sentiment in 1967, and the third-steepest drop. A year ago, the index stood at 95.2. "Consumers are extremely pessimistic," said Lynn Franco, director of the Conference Board's Consumer Research Center. "This news does not bode well for retailers who are already bracing for what is shaping up to be a very challenging holiday season." Lower gas prices may help improve consumers' outlook; but with unemployment on the rise, that may not be enough to bolster consumer confidence.

In September, the seasonally adjusted tonnage index equaled 112.6, its lowest level since October 2007. The seasonally unadjusted index increased 1.1 percent to 116.3 in September. For the third quarter, the seasonally adjusted index contracted 1.2 percent compared with the second quarter, equating to a 4.8 percent annualized rate decrease. The seasonally adjusted index was just 0.8 percent higher compared with September 2007. While the index rose year-over-year because of weak 2007 volumes, it is quickly falling toward negative territory. ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said the recent decreases in truck tonnage are consistent with a recession. Costello forecasts a recession beginning in the 2008 third quarter and through the first quarter of 2009. "I anticipate truck freight volumes to continue to fall before they improve," said Costello. "It is a tough freight market, and there is nothing on the horizon that says this will change anytime soon."

Employment Crossing A report released by an actuarial firm, Bragg Associates, was backed by the Associated Press after a life expectancy calculator was used to estimate the number of years senator John McCain may have left to live. According to the report, Senator McCain, who is currently at age 72, has a one in four chance of being unable to serve two presidential terms totaling eight years. While it is fair to say that either candidate could be unable to serve more than one term in office for whatever reason, should McCain become elected he would be the oldest president to begin a first term in office ever. The firm estimates that McCain would have a 24.44 percent chance of dying by the end of his second term in January of 2017, compared to Senator Barak Obama’s 5.76 percent chance of death. The report continues by taking both candidates health into consideration and uses actuarial sciences to calculate the number of healthy years both candidates have ahead of them. The firm estimates that Obama can look forward to another 21.9 years of health, while McCains health expectancy is a mere 8.4 years. The firm admits that no matter how sophisticated their technology may be, no one can actually calculate the amount of time an individual has to live. A shooting at the University of Central Arkansas' left two students dead and a third wounded, authorities said early Monday. UCA police spokeswoman Lt. Rhonda Swindle said the gunshots were first reported at 9:19 p.m. An officer heard the shooting, which occurred near a male dormitory and behind the campus police station, and arrived on the scene in less than a minute, she said. Witnesses described hearing as many as five gunshots ring out. One man fell to the sidewalk along the narrow alley between the dormitory and a fine arts center and died. Swindle said the two others rushed into the dorm, where they were found by paramedics. One man died at a local hospital, while another who wasn't a student was treated and released, Swindle said. Swindle had no immediate explanation for the shooting, though she said police questioned one "person of interest" into the early morning hours. She said detectives believed four people were involved in the attack, though no arrest or search warrants had been issued. "We have really good leads we're following up on right now and we feel the campus is safe," Swindle said. However, the campus remained under guard Monday morning, with police cruisers circling its quiet streets and officers roaming the grounds in flak jackets and blue jeans. There is speculation that deeper cuts may be on the horizon. Personnel costs represent the bulk of most police departments' budgets. Naperville, Illinois, a middle-class city of about 145,000 people, has a force of 189 officers and 114 civilians. Because of a reduction in real-estate and property tax collections that pay for public safety services, Chief David Dial is cutting nine vacant positions, including three officers, and $60,000 of his training budget. "We've gone through the non-personnel related expenses in our budget, and we've cut everything that we possibly can in there," Dial said. "Some of our training monies have been drastically reduced, and there is virtually nowhere else to cut ..." The community, which has repeatedly ranked as one of the best places to live in the country, will see the effects, Dial said. Naperville is not the only city affected. A poll of 200 departments during the summer by the Police Executive Research Forum, which studies law enforcement trends, reported 39 percent of respondents said their operating budgets were cut because of the economy and 43 percent said the faltering economy had affected their ability to deliver services.

The San Francisco-based environmental group Amazon Watch has accused Chevron of an inappropriate relationship with writer Pat Murphy. The group wants Chevron to divulge their financial relationship in light of disclosures that Murphy's website accepts fees for editorial control of news articles written under Murphy's byline. "Chevron's public relations office and Pat Murphy appear to be engaged in an online deception," said Amazon Watch’s Mitch Anderson. "Murphy writes pro-Chevron articles under the masthead of a commercial blog cleverly designed to look like a newspaper." Next week, Chevron begins a trial in San Francisco federal court on charges it helped the Nigerian military shoot and kill unarmed villagers who had taken over an oil platform in an act of civil disobedience. Murphy was slated to cover the trial as a self-styled "independent" journalist with a press pass from the San Francisco Police Department. Murphy's website, the San Francisco Sentinel, has the look and feel of an online newspaper and does not mention that it accepts fees for control of editorial content. For several months Murphy has been posting articles to discredit indigenous groups suing Chevron for environmental contamination in Ecuador. Murphy has also written pro-Chevron blogs regarding the Nigerian lawsuit that Amazon Watch says are riddled with inaccuracies and obfuscations, and that largely repeat the talking points prepared by the company's public relations department.

American reached a confidential settlement in a similar lawsuit filed against Google this summer, also in the federal court in Fort Worth. Each side agreed to pay its own legal fees, and American got nothing from Google. But Google searches for "American Airlines" or "AAdvantage" no longer produce paid ads along the right side of the portal screen. Google had prevailed in previous lawsuits filed by other companies over their paid search advertising practices using trademark terms.

More than 1,000 dinosaur footprints along with tail-drag marks have been discovered along the Arizona-Utah border. The incredibly rare concentration of beastly tracks ranging from 1 to twenty inches, likely belonged to at least four different species of dinosaurs, ranging from youngsters to adults. "The different size tracks may tell us that we are seeing mothers walking around with babies," said researcher Winston Seiler, a geologist at the University of Utah. The tracks were laid about 190 million years ago in what is now the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. "There must have been more than one kind of dinosaur there," said researcher Marjorie Chan, professor and chair of geology and geophysics at the University of Utah. "It was a place that attracted a crowd, kind of like a dance floor." While the site is covered in sand dunes now, the researchers say the tracks are within what was a network of wet, low watering holes between the dunes. The tracks provide more evidence of wet intervals during the Early Jurassic Period, when the U.S. Southwest was covered with a field of sand dunes larger than the Sahara Desert.

Type “economic meltdown” into the Google.com search engine and you’ll get no results. Not really. But the Mountain View, California-based web giant is definitely not feeling the pinch. Google has reported larger-than-expected revenues of $5.54 billion in the quarter that ended September 30th, an increase of 31% a year ago. Google reported net income for the third quarter of $1.35 billion, up 26% from year ago. Excluding certain charges, such as the cost of employee stock options, the company earned $4.92 a share, better than consensus estimates of $4.75 per share. "While we are realistic about the poor state of the global economy, we will continue to manage Google for the long term, driving improvements to search and ads, while also investing in future growth areas such as enterprise, mobile, and display," said CEO Eric Schmidt said in a statement. Shares of Google jumped more than 7% in after-hours trading. Investors have been concerned about Google's performance, since its business relies heavily on advertising. Google's shares have fallen more than 36% over that time period as investors worried that cash-strapped businesses might stop spending on search advertising. But the number of paid clicks registered by Google on its sites and through its AdSense advertising network grew 4% compared to the second quarter, and 18% compared to the same period a year ago. Google thinks ad revenues might continue to rise through the downturn, as web ads are targetable and measurable.

Mahaney said he came away somewhat more positive on Amazon.com. "We continue to view [Amazon] as the beneficiary of seller shift away from eBay, although we point out that sellers may increasingly look to develop their own sites over other channels," he wrote. Meanwhile, Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian dissected Amazon's prospects, lowering his earnings estimates because of faltering consumer confidence and the stronger dollar. He cut his third-quarter earnings estimate from 27 cents to 25 cents per share, and his revenue estimate from $4.3 billion to $4.27 billion. Amazon shares were down $3.08, or 4.3 percent, at $69 in pre-market trading. EBay shares were down 50 cents, or 2.2 percent, at $21.86.

Banana sales have skyrocketed in Japan this summer as many are itching to try the latest fad in dieting- a Morning Banana Diet. Then he or she can eat anything for lunch and dinner must be consumed by 8pm. The Dieter must not eat dessert and all meals must be consumed by 12 midnight. Mrs. Watanabe designed the diet to increase the metabolism of her overweight husband, who, in due course lost over 37 pounds and then introduced the diet on to one of Japan’s largest social networks called Mixi, where it gained popularity. The diet has since become even more popular through endorsements by local celebrities.

The suspect, who has been out of work since April, admitted to police that he did not want to live because of the pity he experiences as a result of his condition on a daily basis. The 31 year old suspect set fire to his low-cost housing in Seoul and then stabbed several other residents with a sashimi knife while attempting to flee the building. Seven people were seriously wounded by the blaze, one man died after jumping from a window to escape the fire. Five people were also stabbed to death as the suspect, identified by his last name, Jeong, fled the building. Among the seven wounded, four are in critical condition and many suspect that the death toll may rise.

Catholic healthcare company Bon Secours St. Francis Health System's new Millennium hospital in Greenville, South Carolina, will be as an environmentally responsible medical center that emphasizes so-called “holistic” healing and will bring 500 new jobs to the Palmetto State. "I see it as a hospital of the future," St. Francis CEO Valinda Rutledge told The Greenville News. The $151 million St. Francis Millennium will feature an entrance lake, a variety of healing gardens and an interior rain wall, all designed to soothe the spirit as well as the body. The 20-acre facility will house 52 beds, 10 operating rooms, an emergency department with 15 treatment spaces and 16 observation beds, and diagnostic, radiology, laboratory and pharmacy services. Construction is expected to begin in January 2010 and will finish in late 2011 or early 2012. The project must be approved by the state Department of Health and Environmental Control, and hospital officials filed an application for a certificate of need this week. The approval process typically takes six to eight months. The green facility will offer parking for electric vehicles with outlets for recharging. Millennium expects to see 2,300 patients the first year and 2,800 by 2013.

Highland said it would close down its flagship Highland Crusader Fund as well as its Highland Credit Strategies Fund, according to Bloomberg. The funds have assets of more than $1.5 billion, Bloomberg said. Highland had some $37 billion in assets under management as of June 30. A spokesperson for Highland was not immediately available Thursday morning. The credit strategies fund, which specialized in buying high-yield loans and distressed assets, experienced “unprecedented market volatility and disruption,” according to a letter Highland sent to its investors, a copy of which was obtained by Bloomberg. Highland said it would sell 20 percent of that fund’s assets during the next six months, and another 20 percent in the following six-month period. It will sell the remaining assets in the next few years. Crusader first ran into trouble during the summer, as it saw a significant increase in redemptions, or requests from investors who wanted to take their money out. Highland said then it would honor the requests but would need up to nine months to give investors their money back.

Milwaukee county workers are fighting back against potential job cuts. Four hundred county workers held a rally Wednesday evening in front of the Milwaukee County Courthouse. They are concerned they could soon be losing their jobs. The union workers directed their anger at County Executive Scott Walker, who may cut 300 jobs. "His plan to cut county government and privatize jobs is not acceptable," said Rich Abelson, head of District Council 48 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. Walker's 2009 county budget calls for more than $4 million in cuts, including 48 maintenance worker jobs. Walker says an upcoming county referendum to raise the county's sales tax by 1% won't cut it with Milwaukee residents. “The economy is tough, and the last thing they want when the economy is tough is a $130 million sales tax increase,” Walker said.

Sixty percent of young voters have seen a significant drop in entry level jobs in the past year, according to a survey by career web site Experience.com. The survey polled undergraduate and graduate students, as well as young professionals, who planned to vote in the November election. Seventy-seven percent of these so-called “Gen Y” voters said the condition of the job market will affect how they vote on November 4th. More than 12,900 Gen Y voters from all 50 states completed the online survey from Experience Economic stimulation and the energy crisis were the issues that survey respondents considered the most important. "We were somewhat surprised to see that the pendulum for young voters has shifted away from social concerns, toward jobs and the economy," said Jenny Floren, CEO of Experience.com. New Jersey-based pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. announced that its new vaccine manufacturing facility in Durham, North Carolina, has completed start-up activities, and is beginning to validate production processes, a major step toward regulatory approval and licensure of the new facility. Once licensed, the site will produce key childhood vaccines for measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox, as well as a vaccine for shingles in older adults. Merck makes 11 of the 17 vaccines on the pediatric, adolescent and adult immunization schedules in the United States. Merck is naming the new facility in honor of its most distinguished vaccine researcher, the late Maurice R. Hilleman, Ph.D. During his 30 years at Merck, Dr. Hilleman developed vaccines for eight of the diseases for which vaccines are routinely recommended for children in the United States, including measles, mumps and rubella. The facility will be named The Maurice R. Hilleman Center for Vaccine Manufacturing. Merck is making a total planned investment in Durham of approximately $750 million. As many as 400 jobs may be created when the project is completed in 2011.

The 19th annual National Student Conference Against Hunger & Homelessness will be held at University of Southern California from October 27th to the 29th. Dolores Huerta, a former colleague of Cesar Chavez and long-time advocate for immigrant workers’ rights, will be the keynote speaker. Plenary and breakout sessions center around five issue tracks, including: Hunger, Humanitarian Crises, Homelessness/Affordable Housing, Spirituality, Leadership & Justice and Globalization, Development & Trade. The National Student Campaign Against Hunger & Homelessness, a project of the Student Public Interest Research Groups, is organizing the conference with assistance from more than 25 sponsoring groups including Oxfam America, Americorps VISTA program and Idealist.org.

In August of 2001, Judge Michael T. Joyce was involved in a two-car automobile accident. In addition to the $50,000 from State Farm, he also scored a $390,000 check from Erie Insurance Group for the same accident. The federal fraud trial against Joyce will begin October 20th, Statements about the in-line skating “are highly probative in this case because they show Joyce engaging in physical activity during the relevant time period in the indictment,” Assistant U.S.Attorney Christian Trabold said in a court filing. A grand jury in August 2007 indicted Joyce on three counts of mail fraud and six counts of money laundering, all felonies. Joyce has pleaded not guilty. Senior U.S. District Judge Maurice B. Cohill Jr. moved the trial from Erie, Pennsylvania to Pittsburg because of pretrial publicity.

Real estate brokers say many home buyers expect more than they can afford in a home. In an online survey of 150 of its brokers, 102-year-old realty firm Coldwell Banker discovered some disturbing trends among first-time home buyers. While nearly half of the brokers surveyed said affordability was the number one concern for first time buyers, 81 percent of those buyers also consider move-in conditions to be very important when searching for homes. Only 7 percent are considering fixer-upper homes. The real estate company suggests more buyers should examine the fixer-upper option to get the affordability they seek "In the past, first-time home buyers were willing to purchase older, more basic houses in an effort to save money and break into homeownership," said Jim Gillespie, president and chief executive officer, Coldwell Banker Real Estate. "It is important for first-time homebuyers to remember that by considering a fixer-upper for their first home purchase, they can build equity over time and later move up and into their second-stage home that better reflects their expectations," he added. Buyers looking for affordability who go with the fixer-upper option should get the home professionally inspected to determine what fixing up is necessary.

EmploymentCrossing.com New York-based investment managers Blackstone Group LP is joining JPMorgan Chase to raise over $1 billion dollars, to convert 20,000 U.S. cinema screens to digital technology Blackstone and JP Morgan are arranging the financing on behalf of Digital Cinema Implementation Partners, a consortium made up of the three largest U.S. cinema chains. The DCIP has made a deal with five Hollywood studios: Walt Disney Co, Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox and Universal. The Digital Cinema Implementation Partners (DCIP) consortium is made up of AMC Entertainment, Cinemark and Regal Entertainment. Digital projection systems allow cinemas to screen 3D movies, which tend to generate more money per screen than normal films. Digital projection will also save Hollywood money in the long term because the studios will not have to produce or distribute expensive celluloid prints, which can become damaged over time. The conversion of 20,000 screens to digital represents a significant opportunity for the US entertainment industry. There are about 40,000 cinema screens in the US, but only a few hundred can currently show films in 3D.

The PROTECT Our Children Act would authorize $320 million over the next five years to fund law enforcement to investigate child exploitation; mandate that child rescue be a top priority for law enforcement receiving federal funding; and allocate funds for software that can track down Internet predators. Winfrey says that in 2007, U.S. law enforcement identified over 300,000 criminals who trafficked in movies and pictures of young children being raped and tortured. Winfrey also says “hundreds of thousands of children are victims of sexual abuse each year.” This claim is only true if inappropriate online comments constitute “sexual abuse.” The incidence of such “unwanted sex talk” is alarmingly high – one in five online child users say someone has sent them an inappropriate comment. But the proportion of these children who have received a sexual flirtation from an adult followed by a request to meet in person is only one percent. In addition to an expanded federal and law enforcement effort, parents and guardians must take the time to monitor and guide their children’s’ Internet use.
