If you will look at the video in the upper part of the cloud, you can see what looks like bands or stripes...kind of like dinner plates stacked on top of each other. When you see something like this, you know the storm is rotating. This storm did produce a tornado, but unfortunately, it was too dark for me to videotape.

I often wondered when reading the bible how God could guide three men to little spot in a little town using starlight. Then I saw this sight near Vega, TX. The clouds were in just the right position to create this pattern of "rays" that was quite spectacular. Seeing stuff like this is why I storm chase! When I see how the light is projected to a single point, I realized it would have been no problem at all for God to use nature to create a point of light for the wise men to be guided by. Pretty cool huh?

If you ever see one of these coming at you, you know the wind is going to blow hard. A tornado occurs at the back end of a cloud. This gustnado actually could have been a small tornado. It hit the southwest speedway and tore up some fences and bleachers. If you listen in the background, you can hear the cars racing.

The funny thing about this storm is there wasn't even a thunderstorm warning issued on it. I doubt the people in Alanreed even knew what was going on. I don't see this often, but occasionally thunderstorm clouds will produce these funnels high up in the cloud. I think they are called "cold air" funnels. I can usually tell within ten minutes of watching a storm cloud if it is capable of producing these. The whole cloud has spinning vortices in it and it is fun to watch.

This storm started in north Amarillo and absolutely turned into monster! I usually prefer getting behind a storm and chasing it, but this storm ended up chasing me. I would videotape and run...videotape and run. I heard on the radio, are you ready for this? Volleyball size hail! No way was I going to get caught in this storm so it ended up chasing me for 65 miles before I could find a way through it with out getting hurt. When I got back to Amarillo, I saw car lots, and cars at the mall that had been absolutely destroyed by the hail of this storm. It was unbelievable!
