Rufiji River Camp is located on the banks of the Rufiji river, in a point where the ample and tranquil river is animated by many and different species of animals. The tented camp, situated in the heart of the reserve, is environmentally friendly and each tent is equipped with private bathroom and a veranda facing the river. There is a constant flow of animals coming down to drink at the river offering a permanent show to visitors of the camp. The water is usually full of hundreds of hippos as well as groups of crocodiles that laze in the sun on the sandbanks in the river. A structure in the central part of the camp hosts the restaurant, bar and library, all with a view of the river and the sunset.

The Old Parsonage has been converted into the Arthouse Hostel, Launcestons newest backpacker hostel opened on the 2nd November 2007. It has undergone a fitout of brand new beds with fire-retardent inner-spring matresses, new plates, bowls and cutlery in the commercially licensed kitchen, and fire sprinklers and smoke/thermal detectors linked directly to the fire brigade. We are the Worlds first carbon neutral backpacker hostel along with our sister hostel, Central City Backpackers in Hobart. We are embarking on an urban reforestation program with Launceston City Council to meet the needs of offsetting our carbon production. In fact, we are tripling the requirements calculated to make us carbon neutral, so we can be sure that we are doing our best for offsetting, whilst minimising our footprint. In one of the most ambitious conservation plans in Australia’s history, the Australian Rainforest Foundation will bring together all levels of government, community groups and individuals, scientists, land managers, the corporate sector and private citizens from Australia and around the world to work cooperatively to save the endangered Southern Cassowary. The Corridor will be a living green link between the Far North Queensland resort city of Cairns and the southern coastal town of Cardwell, where World Heritage listed rainforest habitat has been fragmented by farms, tourism resorts and urban developments. Although it is often called the Cassowary Corridor, cassowaries are not the Foundation’s only concern. The Foundation aims to protect and rehabilitate habitat for all rainforest wildlife. Cassowaries are a good indicator species to focus on - if we can protect them, we’ll also be protecting a range of other species that share their habitat.
